Bahamas Marine Protected Areas

Shark divers know the Bahamas as one of the best places in the world to see a range of shark species and at great numbers. Years ago, they made a good move by protecting sharks within their Shark Sanctuary. But they are going further by increasing their areas of full protection for marine life.

Not only did they increase income and boost the economy, but with this decision, they also increase climate resiliency, food security, and the health of all their marine resources. Not to mention that they will maintain natural beauty and serenity, something that is becoming increasingly rare on our planet.

Sharks obviously play an important part in this equation, as has been shown by previous studies:

A 2017 study by Haas et al, determined that sharks and rays in the Bahamas generate $113.8 million USD annually for the economy. Most of this revenue comes from the shark diving industry.
