Bre is Tackling the Foveaux Strait for Sharks!

Another woman we are proud of... meet Bre! She is tackling Foveaux Strait to raise awareness and funds for sharks. Follow her journey at on Instagram and Facebook.

"My name is Bre. I’m a 23 year old from Wellington, studying sustainability and outdoor education in Christchurch. In the past few years I’ve been making my way around Aotearoa by biking down the North and South Island for marine causes, and swimming lake Taupō and Cook Strait. I couldn’t have done this without a lot of support, and I feel super lucky and grateful to be part of an awesome swimming and outdoor community which inspires and supports me to do exciting things! My dream is to swim Foveaux strait (Te Ara a Kiwa) this summer (2021/2022). Te Ara a Kiwa (which means the path of the whale) has been on my mind a lot the past few years. I feel both incredibly drawn to it and scared of it (the best kind of combination). The waters are pretty cold. Its between 12 and 15 degrees in summer. And I get pretty nervous about the idea of swimming in an area famous for its shark presence.

This brings me to my next point! Sharks are the apex predators of the ocean, and crucial to our marine eco system. Sharks eat sick and old fish, and keep fish stocks healthy and balanced. Research has shown that increased shark populations result in increased fish populations! There are a whole host of reasons for protecting our beautiful sharks, and I’ll be getting into that throughout this year. Unfortunately, the protection of sharks has become urgent. Shark populations have declined by 71% since 1970. Many shark species could be at threat of extinction. This campaign aims to educate and raise awareness of what we can all to do address this issue.

If you’ve got this far, thanks for reading! I can’t wait to embark on this journey with you all - which I think will be much more of a year long journey than simply a day long swim. As a full time student, financing the swim is another challenge I need to tackle. If you know of any cool sustainable businesses looking for a partnership/to align themselves with a great cause, please get in touch!

Tūwhitia te hopo! Feel the fear and do it anyway!"

Bre, we are in awe of you and support your every move! We cannot wait to see where this journey takes you, and thank you!
