As many pharmaceutical companies push forward with their not-yet-approved COVID-19 vaccines, there is still concern that the use of shark-derived squalene, instead of existing and effective sustainable alternatives, could leave a mark on fragile ocean ecosystems. The current landscape remains the same, although there are two vaccines in development that use shark squalene showing recent positive results. This includes one that is misleadingly marketed across the media as “plant-based”, disregarding their use of a shark-squalene based adjuvant.
