Carlos Gauna's Footage of First Ever Great White Shark!
ICYMI our friend Carlos Gauna (@themalibuartist) has been everywhere this week after capturing footage of what could be the first sighting of a newborn Great White, EVER! Off the coast of California, we have a critical white shark nursery ground, where this 5-foot pup was potted via drone in July. In the 3rd photo of this post, you can see what scientists suspect to be the pup shaking off a milky substance from its tail, believed to be uterine milk from its mother.
Not only are we elated for Carlos' discovery personally, but this could also be part of the missing puzzle pieces in the lifecycle story of California's great white shark populations, and beyond. To this day, the deep ocean area of the Pacific close to to the Hawaiian Islands, "Shared Offshore Foraging Area" (aka White Shark Cafe) has proven to be a mystery to the shark community, with theories ranging from mating, pupping to foraging. Now that Carlos has captured what seems to be the first ever newborn, it could prove to be one of the critical pieces we needed for their protections as a highly migratory species!
You can read more about Carlos' discovery with a quick Google search, but please give his YouTube video a full watch, trust us it's worth it!
